POST LANTERNS

post_lanterns_drw.jpg

  • Post lanterns look thier best if mounted 6 1/2 - 7 1/2 feet above grade.

  • Three feet below grade will reach below frost line in most areas, and insure that the post will not be disturbed by frost heaves.

  • Post should be 12 to 20 feet away from house. Most lanterns are made with standard socket, with total wattage not to exceed 150 watts.

  • To enhance appearance of lantern with glass chimney, flame tip light bulbs add a warm touch.

  WALL LANTERNS

Lanterns should be mounted six feet from the bottom of the door to the center of the light.

To enhance the beauty of the lantern, a block of wood as large of the fixture should be mounted behind the lantern in the same manner as framing a work of art.

SIZING

Small side door - one small lantern
Standard front door - two medium or one large
Large double doors- two large
Overhead garage door - two large

Open bottom lanterns work well for stairs, as they emit light down as well as out!

Sconces

All electric sconces are wired in the back for direct wiring into your electrical box. If electrical box is already in place, be sure to order a sconce wide enough to cover. If you are installing a new box, we suggest using a 2.25"x4" electrical box so that any sconce will cover. When mounting, center of the sconce should be 5.5' from the floor. When selecting a style for use by a bathroom mirror, avoid styles with a mirror included. Sconces with extended arms work well for a bathroom, as they bring light away from the wall. When lighting a hallway, select a style close to the wall to avoid any obstruction in the passageway.

Hanging Lanterns

Hanging lanterns, which will be hung over an object, should be in proportion to the size of the object not the size of the room. For a large foyer or cathedral ceiling, use a large fixture hung on the high side as compared to a chandelier. When lighting a passageway, which is frequently used, an open bottom lantern is your best choice as it emits light both downward and outward. All lanterns wire directly into your electrical box in the ceiling. Open bottom lanterns, where the light comes from the top, are equipped with a standard base socket. Wattage should not exceed 100 watts.

Chandeliers

Chandeliers should be hung at least 30" above the center of a table with 6" of clearance on all sides. When not over a table, the width of the chandelier should measure in inches what the diagonal of the room measures in feet. Each candelabra socket holds a maximum of 60 watts. Those with a down light can hold a 50-75 watt reflector spot light. Chandeliers with down lights are unique as arms provide light to the room, while down light illuminates the subject over which it is placed. Fixtures can be custom designed with candle arms and electric down light to blend the days of old with modern times. All chandeliers wire directly into your electrical box in the ceiling.
